Touring drive event celebrating Bentley’s100th year (June 24-25)
2019 is a commemorative year celebrating the centenary anniversary of Bentley, Britain’s prestigious manufacturer of luxury cars. Bentley enthusiasts are holding celebration events not only in the UK but also all over the world. In Japan, a touring drive was held by Bentley Motors Japan as an official event in late June taking place in Kanto region.
Meiji Jingu Shrine, with its characteristic Japanese beauty, was selected as the Tokyo starting point for the tour. The first day of the event had to endure rainfall, but despite such bad weather, five Bentley cars from the W.O. era, early models characterized by their open bodies, gathered.
In addition, post-war classics such as the 1950s R Type and the 1960s S2 Continental along with the Continental R and Azure, youngtimers classics from the 1990s, participated. The newest Bentley Continental GT Convertible (as-yet-unreleased in Japan) was the event’s official car, while other newer models made an appearance. A total of about 20 new and classic Bentley cars showed up as if an exclusive Bentley museum was set up at Meiji Jingu Shrine under soft rain, before setting off to Omotesando and Harajuku.
After driving for about 70km, the participants took a lunch break at our Wakui Museum savoring udon noodles, the local specialty of Kazo City. Having enjoyed the museum for a while, they resumed the competition and headed for Karuizawa where they stayed overnight at an elegant resort hotel. Here the entrants were served an extraordinary Centenary Dinner which Bentley had stipulated be served worldwide to celebrate its centennial milestone.
The following day, June 25th was a lovely clear summer day filled with sunshine, a pleasant change from the previous day’s rain. The team of classic Bentley cars followed a path towards the foot of Mount Asama, touring on peaceful country roads. After enjoying lunch at a pleasant rustic hot spring inn in Gunma, they reached the finale and closed the event.
At the “Bentley Centenary Commemorative Touring Event” all cars and drivers enjoyed the touring until the very end, succeeding in celebrating Bentley’s 100th anniversary in the greatest way possible.
